Tamilnadu
Newsprint and Papers Limited is a paper manufacturing industry in Tamilnadu. TNPL
does not cut trees and does not use the wood to manufacture paper. Instead it
uses bagasse for manufacturing paper. Bagasse is nothing but the sugarcane
waste and this industry uses as little wood as possible.TNPL uses nearly one
million tonnes of bagasse to produce paper every year and it is the largest
paper manufacturing industry in the world which uses bagasse to manufacture
paper. It produces both printing as well as writing paper. The paper produced
by TNPL is not only used by India but the papers are also exported to other countries.
The major aim of TNPL is to produce papers without causing harm to the
environment. It makes papers by following environmental harmless and pollution
free technologies . The industry follows all the environmental laws and
regulations and produces paper accordingly. It uses only renewable raw
materials for making papers and minimises the use of resources like water,
power, wood, energy etc. as much as possible.
It mainly depends on river Cauvery for its water supply. It is allowed to use only 16 million gallons of water from Cauvery every day. During the process of manufacturing paper, effluents will be released from the industry. Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board has framed certain regulations with regards to the quantity of effluents that should be released by any industry. Every industry should follow the rules specified by the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Boatrd. The effluents released by TNPL during the process of manufacturing paper does not violate the rules specified by the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board. The effluent water released by TNPL is treated properly and it is used to irrigate the lands around the industry. Every year, it is making utmost efforts to reduce the amount of water used for the production of paper. By treating the effluent water released during the manufacturing process, it returns nearly 80% of the water it has used from the river Cauvery. It also has rain water harvesting system to make efficient use of rain water and reducing the water used from the river Cauvery. TNPL does not rely on outside sources to generate power. It has its own power generating station which produces approximately 61.18 MW of power. It takes immense measures to save energy. To generate energy, it tries to use maximum amount of waste fuels released due to agricultural processes. Every year, it tries to reduce the amount of energy consumed by two percent. It has also started a wind farm project which tries to reduce the carbon emissions. Lime sludge and fly ash will be released during manufacturing paper. With the ash and sludge released during paper manufacturing, TNPL is in an aim to start a small cement producing plant. In 2004, TNPL has received the ISO 14001 certificate for successfully implementing the environmental management system and in 2009, it received the green business leadership award. TNPL is in an idea of using wild sugarcane for making paper instead of bagasse. The major advantage of using wild sugarcane is that it uses less water when compared to bagasse because it has less sucrose and high fibre content. TNPL plays a major role in reducing deforestation. TNPL alone takes the pride of saving 30000 acres of forests every year by producing papers using bagasse rather than by using the woods of the trees. TNPL has two plantation schemes namely Farm Forestry and Captive plantation to plant and cultivate 15000 acres of land every year. In captive plantation scheme, it gives government land which is not being used and other lands belonging to TNPL on lease to grow and cultivate pulp wood which gives more yield when compared to the existing pulp wood. Under farm forestry planting scheme, it helps nearby farmers and employees to encourage cultivating pulp wood. By the end of next year, TNPL plans to cultivate about one lakh acres of land using the above two planting schemes. It also educates its employees as well as people around the industry to save and protect our environment in whatever means they can. TNPL tries in every way possible to save raw materials, resources, power, energy, water, forests and also plants crops to increase the green cover of our country.
